Pat McDonnell Paints were thrilled to supply paints and painting accessories to team Salvage Squad. Read on to learn more about the colours and paints used in Episode Five.
The Salvage Squad is a fun new home interior makeover series packing an important sustainability punch. Each episode features two families who have the opportunity to get a room makeover with a twist - everything must be freecycled, up-cycled, sustainable, second-hand or salvaged!
This series is all about bringing joy back into tired spaces. The Salvage Squad designers, upcycling experts and trusty tradespeople are tasked with the transformation on a budget of €1,000 and just three days to sustainably turn a neglected room into a gorgeous, functional new space. But this isn’t a budget show – it's all about thinking outside the box and putting sustainability to the forefront.
Pat McDonnell Paints were delighted to supply paints and painting accessories to team Salvage Squad! For the most sustainable option, we felt that Ralston was the perfect fit!
Ralston uses the latest technology to create paints that are not only high-quality but also friendlier to our environment. This water-based paint range uses premium raw materials derived, where possible from natural sources to minimise the environmental impact of their products. Extending the life cycles of their paint products, and striving to reduce waste, water usage and CO2 emissions are core to their manufacturing principles.
Ralston's biobased range is VOC-free and made from fully renewable, sustainably extracted organic ingredients while maintaining best-in-class paint performance. The BIOseries contains raw materials that can grow back within the lifetime of the paint. These materials are extracted from renewable sources, produced responsibly and don’t negatively impact on the food chain.
For the first makeover of the episode, Cork designer Cathy Angelini helped Ballybrack-based single dad, Ray, give his cabin a snazzy new look. One of the key challenges of this makeover was to transform the space from a ‘lad’s pad’ into something suitable for all the family. To achieve this, designer Cathy devised a warm and inviting design that created clear living and dining zones.
To start, the Salvage Squad team primed and sealed the knots in the pine wood to prevent them from bleeding through the paintwork. Once dry, they then applied Lighthouse – a beautiful warm white from the Ralston range.
Through the use of light paint colours and strategic decoration, the team opened up this small space and gave it a much brighter look. They paired Lighthouse with splashes of colour and rich, warm touches evocative of the 1970s to give the space a totally unique personality and charm!
For the show’s second makeover, ‘Sustainability Queen’ Gwen Kenny helped the Moore family in Blackrock reclaim their living room. Serving as a home office, a sitting room and a playroom; this very important room had to fill many functions for the family. With the help of The Salvage Squad under the direction of designer Gwen Kenny, this makeover would create a stylish and relaxing space that worked for all the family. Taking inspiration from ‘The Secret Garden’, designer Gwen came up with a colourful design that took inspiration from nature.
For the main walls, skirting boards, window sills and doors, the Salvage Squad team applied ‘P08110’ – a pale, yellow-based white from Ralston. This was paired with two beautiful earthy green hues ‘G19420’ and ‘P11040’ – also from Ralston. Finally, a delicate touch of pink was added through the soft colour ‘P05910’. A low sheen finish was used throughout for a modern and sophisticated look.
