How To Clean & Store Your Brushes

Need advice on cleaning your paint brushes? After any DIY project you undertake, correctly cleaning and storing your paint brushes may be the last thing you want to do. However if you want to ensure your paint brushes have a long life, the cleaning process is essential. We have created this step by step guide to help you correctly clean and store your paint brushes.

In the middle of a painting project and want to keep your brushes fresh overnight?

In this case, there’s no need to give them a thorough clean.

  1. Simply wrap the head of your paintbrushes and roller in an airtight plastic bag (we suggest taking a look around your home and reusing an old plastic bag you might otherwise through out).
  2. Seal around the handle with masking tape and store in a dry place for up to two days.

Once you’ve finished painting

It’s now time to give your brushes and rollers a proper clean.

First, scrape off as much paint as you can.

  • Using water-based paint?
  1. Simply soak your brush or roller in warm water for about 2 hours.
  2. Dry with a clean cloth
  3. Store in a dry place for future use
  • Using solvent-based paints?
  1. Pour a small amount of solvent-based cleaner into a small jar or container
  2. Work the brush against the sides to get the cleaner into the base of the bristles
  3. Soak for about 2 hours
  4. Dry with a clean cloth
  5. Store in a dry place for future use

ENVIRONMENTAL TIP

You shouldn’t pour solvents down the sink, so after you’ve finished cleaning your brushes, pop a lid on your jar or container and leave for 24 hours.

Once the paint has sunk to the bottom;

  1. Tip the remaining solvent cleaner into the bottle for future use.
  2. Leave the paint to fully dry in the jar before disposing in the bin.

Try to use as small a jar or container as possible to keep the solvent use to a minimum – the planet will thank you!
